444 days. 53 countries. One overland journey from the UK to New Zealand.
The road doesn't lie.
It strips away everything comfortable and shows you exactly who you are โ and who you're capable of becoming.
We brought home more than memories. We brought home this. ๐

Romania surprised us. It wasnโt just the mountains, the roads, or the history carved into its valleys. It was the people โ proud, practical, quietly resilient.
As we packed up the Rav4 and punched the starter motor, ready for the next border, we carried a little piece of Romania with us โ not just a souvenir bear, but the memory of its wild beauty, its unpredictable roads, and the open-hearted strangers who made us feel at home, halfway across the world. And a lovely tablecloth given to us by Jeni, which had been her grandmotherโs. We felt so humbled.

Romania reminded us that resilience is rarely dramatic.
It isnโt always the thunderstorm on a mountain pass or the tension of a border crossing. Sometimes itโs a 2:27am flood warning you ignore in your sleep.
Sometimes itโs a washed-out bridge and a 27-kilometre detour through villages you never planned to see.
The flattened battery โ again!
The bridge was gone.
โข The battery was dead.
โข The road wasnโt what we expected.
โข None of it required panic.
โข It required adjustment.
Plans collapse.
โข Infrastructure fails.
โข The route you mapped no longer exists.
The question is not Why is this happening? The question is What now?
Romania also showed us
When our battery died, it wasnโt technology that saved us. It was people. A farmer. A retired police officer. A spare battery in a garage. Homemade bread and preserves. A grandmotherโs tablecloth gifted with humility.
True resilience is rarely solo.
They value relationships as highly as resources. They understand that adaptability is easier when youโre connected.
The flood didnโt take us.
The broken bridge didnโt stop us.
The dead battery didnโt strand us.
Because resilience isnโt about avoiding setbacks.
Itโs about absorbing them โ and moving forward anyway.
The road through Romania taught us this:
โข Expect detours.
โข Welcome help.
โข Stay steady.
โข And keep driving.
