Jim owned a medium sized retail shop right in the centre of the CBD. The shop was light and airy with floor to ceiling windows. The furniture in it was arranged in such a way that it welcomed you into the shop. Jim himself was early 40’s, about 5’10”, short light brown hair, and he was a bit portly now – due to long hours worked in the shop and a shortness of doing regular exercise that he once did regularly. He employed 7 staff.
Jim had asked to meet with me to see if I could help reinvigorate his flagging sales, stop his 13-hour workdays, and to try and reinvigorate his staff who were anxious about their employment prospects because of the current downturn they were experiencing. They had seen so many of their friends lose their job.
“Hi Jim,’ I said, as I entered the shop, and shook his hand. Jim smiled, looked me in the eye, and I marvelled at the firm grip of his handshake.
“Hi Pete, it’s good to have you here, and thanks for coming. I really am nervous about this meeting, because I think you may tell be to close my Business, after seeing what’s happening, and I don’t want to do that!”
“Well Jim, first things first.” as I thrust a packet of chocolate biscuits toward him. “Let’s have coffee and biscuits and chat as we do. Let’s see what’s actually going on, shall we?”
The coffee was hot and excellent, and both of us had 2 more biscuits than we should have, but both of us turned the blind eye to each other’s excesses!
“Well Jim,” I said, as I munched on the last part of my biscuit, “I guess I’m here right now because….

“Jeepers Pete, I can tick 3 out of those 5 immediately. No wonder I feel so anxious about Business at present! How am I going to survive? This current crisis thing has dealt such a harsh blow to me and the other shop owners around here.”
“I completely understand what you’re saying Jim. Many many business owners have been saying the same thing to me. This is what Kevin realised, “I was a workaholic and an unorganized one ….
I have now gone from working from 7.30 – 8pm most days to working 8.30 – 5pm, which has helped my family life.”
“Jim, those are great questions. But like an Olympic swimming coach, I will teach you, guide you, and mentor you, - but, and here’s the big but – you actually have to get in the water and do the swimming. I can’t do it for you. But you will have learnt some great techniques and knowledge, so you can swim faster and longer.”

This is what Phil has found, “I was totally against putting my prices up, because I thought we would lose clients, but Pete convinced me to. I am amazed, we haven’t lost one, client, and we’re making more money than ever before.”
